Fisheries

The FISHERY sector plays an important role in the rural economy of Pakistan. More than 471 000 fisher folks, including 287 000 inland fisher folks, find employment in the sector, while the secondary sector (fishery products processing, input provision and marketing) provides employment and income to more than 110 000 households.

Although exact data for aqua culture are lacking, it is estimated that the number of farmers actively involved in this activity is increasing rapidly. Capture fisheries and aqua culture together provide employment for around one percent of the total labour force available in the country.

The fishery sector contributes around 1 percent to the GDP of Pakistan and the total fishery production was estimated at around 650 000 tonnes in 2000. Of the 180 000 tonnes produced in inland waters, some 20 percent originate from aqua culture. Per caput consumption of fishery products is however low with just 2.2 kg/caput per year. Exports of fishery products were valued in 2001 at US$ 125 million. The principal export markets are USA, Japan, Sri Lanka, Singapore, the EU and the Gulf States
