The fishery sector contributes around 1 percent to the GDP
of Pakistan and the total fishery production was estimated
at around 650 000 tonnes in 2000. Of the 180 000 tonnes produced
in inland waters, some 20 percent originate from aqua culture.
Per caput consumption of fishery products is however low with
just 2.2 kg/caput per year. Exports of fishery products were
valued in 2001 at US$ 125 million. The principal export markets
are USA, Japan, Sri Lanka, Singapore, the EU and the Gulf
States
